Flooding is an international phenomenon whose consequences are more often than not detrimental to human wellbeing, infrastructure and socio-economic development of the affected area. Floods in Europe are a frequent occurrence; they affect many countries and the Czech Republic is no exception. In 2010, The Liberec region in the north of the country suffered from devastating flash floods that caused damage worth billions of crowns and claimed several human lives. Given the region's history, it is not surprising that flooding is one of the focal points of the OTN pilot Liberec. Recently, the pilot produced two map compositions intended to help Liberec citizens better prepare for and cope with natural disasters like flooding. Hydrology Map (https://goo.gl/uSuYaJ) allows users to follow current hydro-meteorological situation in the region and to see three different levels of flood threat/alert (emerging, real and state of emergency). The map consists of many layers but the two most important ones are current precipitation and current river levels. There is also a cadastral map for easier property identification. Liberec Points of Interest Flood Map (https://goo.gl/AOJ3ow) displays location and contact information of different organizations that can provide help and assistance during flooding. These include police, fire brigades, hospitals, schools, as well as organisations providing transportation and different types of emergency services, including forest, sewage and water pipe maintenance. The pilot is now looking for your contributions to enrich its map portfolio. Due to the fact that Greece has immensely rich cultural heritage, a map that would combine museums' location along with Athen's available means of transportation and traffic data would facilitate your decision making on which sights to visit and which route to take so as to make the best of your time in Athens. The application 'Athens Museum Planner' solves this issue within the MEDHackathon applications contest. Based on available traffic and transportation data, we would like to combine medical and hospital data coming from Western Greece, so as to locate the optimal blood and bone marronw donor, based on traffic status, as well as on distance from and accessibitility to the hospital in need. Output should be a mobile app that takes the geo-location of donors and displays it on the map via a WMS service along with the other transportation and traffic data, so as to suggest to medical staff the optimal donor to come. We would like to optimise agricultural products' transportation and time-to-marketplaces by monitoring agricultural production per year, per period of year and per area. We are interested in combining both agricaltural data, but also traffic flow data and weather data so as to be able to make better decisions on what type of trucks to engage and around what time of the year, the week and the day, so as to optimise fuel efficiency of trucks, costs for logistics operators, freshness and good quality of products, as well as lower CO2 emissions.
A large part of Athens-Patras national road (motor road A8) has been under construction for several years due to delays caused by the financing issues. While the roadworks have been under way the number of accidents increased dramatically, earning A8 a reputation of one of the most dangerous roads in the country. According to the traffic police, drivers are three times more likely to be involved in a traffic accident on A8 than on A2, i.e. the northern Egnatia Highway, or when driving from Athens to Thessaloniki. Your task is to (i) analyse traffic volumes on A8, or different segments thereof, (ii) investigate the effect of construction work on the nearby transport infrastructure, (iii) overlay, if possible, road traffic data with the traffic accident data for the area and (iv) propose ways to optimise traffic flow on A8 and/or other motorways.
